How Many Ounces In A Quart (easy Guide)
The term ounce comes from the Roman word “uncia”. What is an ounce? It was 1/12 of a Roman copper bullion! These rods were used as measuring instruments to calculate the length of an inch and the weight of an ounce.
Imperial Pint and weighs 1/16 pound or 28.3 grams. In the apothecary system, an ounce was equal to 480 grains or 1/12 of a pound. Is it any wonder Britain standardized the metric system?
The United States of America, Liberia, and Myanmar are three countries that still use imperial measures (and thus the quarter).
The origin of “quart” is a little more clear than the ounce. The word quart comes from the Latin word quartus, meaning fourth, and later the French word quarte (or 1/4 portion). In liquid measurement, this means 1/4 gallon.
How Many Quarts Are In A Gallon?
As with other measurements, not all liters are created equal! An English quarter is 38.43 ounces (as opposed to ours, which is 32 oz). However, it makes sense when you consider the fact that their gallon is 153.72 oz (versus our 128 oz).
Although in both cases a quart is 1/4 gallon, the measurements differ due to the different sizes of gallons (similar to liters in a gallon).
In both the imperial and metric systems, 2 pints equal 1 litre. Today, England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand rarely use the liter measurement (as opposed to the pint, which is often used to order beer). All of these nations switched to the metric system using the liter as the nearest measure of the quart.

In Australia, Canada and New Zealand, a quart is defined as 40 imperial ounces. That’s the equivalent of 38.43 US fluid ounces, so it’s a little different than a pint in the United States. Basically:
Wet and dry ingredients cannot be measured the same because they are very different. They have different densities and need to be measured by volume.
A liquid is less dense than a solid, so it takes up more space. This is why a liquid liter contains 32 oz, while a dry liter has 37.23 oz. Here are ounce to cup conversions of common ingredients!

The quart was originally a medieval English unit of dry and liquid measures ranging between 0.95 and 1.16 liters, relatively close to their modern equivalents. In Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Miller’s Tale (c. 1370) it was used as a measure of beer. Encyclopedia Brittanica What is an ounce?
