Japanese Spicy Mayo

Japanese Spicy Mayo – The restaurant version of spicy mayo for sushi was hard to top — and still is. Here’s that recipe, as well as a tastier version with a few extra ingredients. Great for sushi, poke, salads and more.

Over the years, this recipe has often been one of Umami Girl’s most popular, and for good reason. It’s almost like a magic trick – so quick and easy, yet so effective at breathing life into a variety of foods.

Japanese Spicy Mayo

Even better in some situations. It’s great for sushi bowls and poke. But it also makes a wonderful side dish, sandwich spread, and salad dressing.

These two sauces are similar but not identical. Spicy mayo is made with mayonnaise and hot sauce or Sriracha. But yum yum sauce is made with mayo and tomato paste, adding a spicy element. The slight tomato flavor in the yum yum sauce is not present in the spicy mayo.

If you’re making this spicy mayo recipe and can’t find Sriracha, you can make it at home by mixing cayenne pepper, white pepper, chili powder, garlic and onion powder, sweet chili powder, and lemon juice.

This spicy mayo recipe can be used in many ways. Serve it with sushi, sandwiches, salads and more.

Make Ahead: You can make this mayo weeks ahead. Refrigerate and shake before each use.

Storage: Store leftovers from this spicy mayo recipe in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.

Freezing: I do not recommend freezing this sauce as the texture becomes lumpy and separates when thawed.

Spicy mayo and yum yum sauce both have a mayonnaise base, but spicy mayo has more heat than yum yum sauce. Most spicy mayo is made with just two ingredients, like the one I’m sharing here. Yum Yum sauce is sweeter and less spicy because it uses ketchup or tomato paste, vinegar, garlic, sugar and a little hot sauce. It is used in American-style hibachi restaurants.
