Sashimi and nigiri are usually the two most popular types of sushi, but many people don’t know the difference. Although these two dishes may look similar, they are very different.
Nigiri is a common and very popular sushi dish in Japanese cuisine. The main ingredients are fish and rice for sushi. The base is sushi rice, seasoned with vinegar and sweetener, and a thin piece of fish is placed on top.
Nigiri comes in many forms, including uni, salmon, yellowtail, halibut and tuna. In most restaurants, I will see a small amount of wasabi between the fish and the rice. Some places will serve a separate side of wasabi so we can control how much we put in our rolls.
At first I thought nigiri was always served raw, but sometimes it is also made with fried or boiled fish. To boil or fry nigiri, they use the tataki method, which is to keep it on an open fire for a while.

First, nigiri is a type of sushi, sashimi is not. This is the most obvious difference between them. It also affects the flat layer. Nigiri are often laid out in a row, and sashimi laid out on a serving tray.

But sashimi is a good choice if you want to reduce calories. The absence of rice makes this dish an excellent choice for lower calories compared to nigiri. Although I personally love sushi rice!

Sashimi is also an interesting way to expand your Japanese cuisine horizons. Since many sashimi menus include other types of seafood and meat, you have more choices.
