Did you know there are two types of measuring cups? One for dry ingredients like sugar and flour and one for liquids like oil, water or milk.

The dried measuring cups should be leveled with a butter knife. Whereas a liquid measuring cup has a small spout for pouring the liquid so that you cannot pour it. You will find the measurements along the lines on the side of the cup, compared to the measurements on the top of the measuring cup.

The dry factor will depend on how you measure it. Many times with products like brown sugar, you’ll pack the sugar tightly into a measuring cup. You add plain sugar, rice or oats until the scoop is full, or scoop it out of the container.

For the flour, you’ll take a small spoon and scoop the flour into an actual measuring cup. Be careful to never pack the cup too tightly.

If you do, you’ll need too much flour, which can make your mixture too dry and your recipe not perfect.

To measure liquid ingredients, take a measuring cup and place it on a flat surface. Add fluid slowly while bending down to eye level to see where your fluid is being measured. Eye level is important to ensure you are measuring at the correct level.

The metric system is used worldwide except in the United States, Myanmar, and Liberia. Although the US does not use the metric system, quantities on packaging are marked in metric and imperial measurements. The units differ between systems of most units of measurement.

For example, the metric system calculates length in meters, while the imperial system uses miles. The same goes for liters and ounces, so knowing both systems can be very useful when you’re busy in the kitchen. I’ve rounded some numbers (mostly milliliters and teaspoons) to make counting easier.
