A gallon is a unit of measure used to measure liquid capacity. While you may not need to use this when making certain liquid-based recipes (such as smoothies or milkshakes), it is useful to understand when using the metric or imperial system.
However, this may vary depending on which measurement system you use, either the metric system or the imperial system. The imperial system can be further divided into liquid liters or dry liters.
How Many Liters In A Gallon (with Conversion Guide)
The Imperial Gallon (also known as the UK Gallon) is used in Commonwealth countries and some Caribbean countries. This corresponds to 4.54609 liters or 277.42 cubic centimeters.
Initially, the imperial gallon was equal to 10 pounds, which was equivalent to 4.54 kg of water at a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius. An Imperial Fluid Ounce is equal to 1/160 of an Imperial Gallon.
An imperial gallon consists of 4 quarts and each quart has 2 pints. If you convert pints to imperial fluid ounces, you get 20 imperial fluid ounces.
In US fluid liters, one US gallon means 3.7854 liters or 231 cubic centimeters. When stored at 10 degrees Celsius, a US gallon weighs 3.78 kg, or 8.34 pounds. The weight is almost 16.6 percent less than the Imperial Gallon.

For many conversions, liters and quarts can be treated the same because the measurements are so close. However, when brewing kombuchaor beer, precision and the right ingredients are more important.
Why are they not exactly the same? Because quarts and liters are from different measuring systems. While quarts are an imperial measurement, liters are a metric measurement.
A quart is 32 fluid ounces. The word quart comes from the Latin word quartus which means fourth and the later Old French word quarte also means ¼ part. In liquid measurements, this means ¼ liter. The term Gallon also comes from Rome and originates from the word Galleta or Galletum which means wine jug. The Romans apparently liked their wine in large containers.
In Rome everything was measured in 1/2s, 1/4s. 1/8s etc. This seems inconvenient today as a decimal system of measurements makes so much sense, but in Roman times it was easy to measure 1/4 of a liter, ie. quarter. The color was obtained by dividing the contents of a liter jug in half and then in half again. On the other hand, it was difficult to share exactly 1/10 of a carafe of wine. This logic is evident in all unmeasured metrics today. So, our imperial measurement system is not illogical. It’s just old school.
