Texans love to be hot peppers. It’s not uncommon to see a good boy or girl sipping from a 32-ounce styrofoam cup of the sweet stuff and refilling it throughout the day. Her fans are addicted. I rarely drink soft drinks myself, so I was surprised to discover that Dr. Pepper’s closest competitor, Mr. PiBB, long ago became PiBB Xtra, a drink that bills itself as a spicy cherry soda. It originally started out as Dr PiBB, but it didn’t last long because it was too similar to a pepper. This was one of a number of legal disputes over the years between The Coca-Cola Company and Dr. Pepper. While PiBB has its loyal brewers, Texas has always sided with the Peppers.

Dr. Pepper was first brewed in a Waco dispensary in 1885, making it the oldest major soft drink in the United States. It made its national debut at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904. And while Waco is where you’ll find the Dr. Pepper Museum will find, Roanoke, Virginia reckons, itself as the Dr. Pepper capital of the world. His connections with Dr. Pepper is traced back to a possible urban legend related to Dr. Charles T. Pepper, who some say is the soda’s namesake. Dr. Pepper was bottled in Dublin, Texas for over 120 years by Dublin Bottle Works until 2012 when it was purchased from Dr. Pepper divorced. Dublin Bottling Works soon began producing its own sugar cane flavored soft drinks, including one similar to Dr. Pepper, called Dublin Creative. Although it has 24 flavors compared to DP’s 23, it was determined to be too close to the Dr. Pepper brand and was deleted according to an agreement between Dublin Bottling Works and Dr. Pepper Snapple, according to the Dallas Morning News. In July 2018, Keurig Green Mountain and Dr Pepper Snapple merged to form Keurig Dr Pepper. It is publicly traded as KDP.
The new campaign to make it the official soft drink of Texas follows several marketing moments such as the song “Be a Pepper” featuring actor David Naughton, best known for the London film An American Werewolf, who “Wouldn’t You Be a Pepper, don’t sing, too?” with a crowd of happy peppers dancing behind him. There was also Gene Simmons from KISS trolling DP Cherry with the catchphrase, “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor.”
