I asked my followers on social media how to fill their cup. A lot of things like flour or sugar come out of the bag and it’s spread over the top, so that’s the way I look when I’m measuring something for my calculations. I also like to give the pouch a little before breaking up any lumps.

Most conversion charts give 1 cup of flour as 120g. However, I have found that the most expensive method is to sift the flour and use a spoon to fill the cup with the sifted flour. I don’t know about you, but it’s better to wash the dough after it’s been kneaded, not before. So in reverse, you will notice that one cup of flour weighs more because it shows how I filled the cup.
For things that are in small packages, I pour them into the glass directly from the bag and adjust the surface.
For soft things like butter or cream cheese, I press it into the cup with the back of a spoon to make sure that every hole is filled and make the surface high.
In baking accuracy is important, so for baking flour, I always recommend using grams if you can.

As I worked through all the conversions for this calculation, I realized that how I filled the cups affected the number of items I could fit.
In the picture below you can see two cups full of flour. However, the one on the right weighs 40% more than the one on the left, because I packed the dough well.
The official US cup size is 236.588ml, but most cups available for purchase in stores assume 240ml for convenience (this is what I assumed in the calculation). However, there are some glass manufacturers that sell glasses that are 250ml (but still half a glass at 120ml!).
This is not a big deal if you know what you have. The bigger problem is that not all the glass that is sold is the right one.
Makaibari Darjeeling Organic Tea (100g / 3.5oz // 30 40 Cups)
I have two sample cups, but they are not the same size. In one set my ¼ cup holds 65ml (it should be 60ml), but the full cup only holds 225ml when it should be 240ml (don’t worry, I’ve changed everything here to make sure the cup is the right size).
If you have a recipe like scones or shortbread that calls for cold butter straight from the fridge, how do you get it in a glass?
Imagine you are weighing walnuts. If you put it in the whole glass, you will be better off if you chop it up before you add it to the glass.
There are also some things like Nutella or Black Treacle that are difficult to remove from the glass after filling. It is unlikely that you will get everything you put in so you may end up adding a little more to the mix than the menu item.
How Many Ounces Is 100 Grams? 100 Ounces Equal 100g?
Most scales have a tare button that allows you to pause the scale at 0 so you can continue measuring other items on the same plate. That’s great because it means you can add everything you need to your mix without a lot of dirty equipment.
Imagine you have a recipe that calls for a cup of butter, flour, maple syrup and Nutella (don’t know what to do!). To get an accurate measurement, you need to have several cups or wash the cup between each item before measuring the next one.
The lower cup is under the cup. As far as measurements go, it’s a little sketchy! Also, the amount of money that will be invested in the collected glass can vary depending on the type of glass. That’s why I don’t use one of these definitions in recipes (it’s a flat cup, tablespoon or teaspoon for me).
In addition to the main calculator, I think it will help to provide a table of conversions for a selection of the most popular items.

I am an American who lived in England for many years, so I can relate to how difficult it is to change from a measuring cup to a scale. The cup is more intuitive, and we all like to stick to what we are happy with, which is good if you measure carrots to be strong where the difference of a few grams will not affect the results. However, they are not too much if you measure the flour for the cake, where a few grams can be the difference between “fall and flat” and “light and soft.”
