How Long To Cook Hot Dogs In Microwave
We did a serious test on how long to microwave a hot dog. In short, you shouldn’t microwave your hot dog for too long!
Beef Hot Dog (14 Oz.)
When I was a kid, we didn’t have fancy things like pressure cookers, deep fryers, or microwaves. We had a stove with an oven on it. So when my mom made us hot dogs, she would put hot water in a pot on the stove. She would throw some hot dogs at him and boil the water. Hot dogs needed to be boiled for 5 minutes or less, and then we ate them on hot dog buns with lots of mustard. They were delicious because our mom made it. 🙂
Believe it or not, we used to eat cold from a hot dog pack for fast food. But from the fridge. After all, the hot dog is fully cooked, right? Yes, there is one exception, food safety! If you have a high risk of foodborne illness, bacterial infections such as listeriosis may pose a risk to you. I don’t cook them.
They are not! The FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service) says don’t eat uncooked hot dogs, which means removing hot dogs from the package before they’re cooked. The reason is the risk of listeriosis. Remember, even if the hot dog package says “Well Cooked,” it’s not safe to eat hot dogs without first warming them to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
This FSIS states: “Even if hot dogs are fully cooked, those at high risk of foodborne illness should reheat hot dogs and lunch meats until they are steaming because of the risk of listeriosis.”
How Long To Boil Hot Dogs
Hot dogs should be cooked HOT! To be safe, make sure the hot dog is cooked to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit. You can easily check the temperature with a kitchen thermometer.
👩🍳 How long can you cook a hot dog in the microwave? (7 tests) Test 1. A frozen hot dog wrapped in a dry paper towel
Ok, this is our first test. The cooking method we chose was to use a 1500 watt microwave oven and paper towels. We took the frozen hot dog out of the freezer, wrapped it in a layer of paper towels, and placed it on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave the frozen dog for 30 seconds. Then we took the hot dog out of the microwave and checked its internal temperature. It was only 107.2 degrees Fahrenheit, so we put the hot dog back in the microwave for another 15 seconds.
Again we pulled out the hot dog and the internal temperature was 144 degrees Fahrenheit. We microwaved the hot dog for another 10 seconds, took it out and checked the internal temperature again, this time it was 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Arrow! The hot dog looked great and tasted great. It was hot inside and did not crack or warp.

The second test we did was to take a wet paper towel and wrap it around a frozen hot dog. Then put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. We took out the hot dog and measured its internal temperature. It was 78 degrees Fahrenheit. So we microwaved the hot dog for another 15 seconds.
Then we checked the internal temperature again, 96 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s still not enough. We microwaved the hot dog for another 10 seconds and the temperature was 158 degrees Fahrenheit. We worked for another 5 seconds and finally the hot dog was 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
We still used frozen hot dogs, but we didn’t wrap them in paper towels. We set the microwave door to 55 seconds without opening it, and when we took the hot dog out of the microwave, the internal temperature was 168 degrees Fahrenheit. The hot dog looked good, was hot and tasted great. Won’t crack or bend.
The next hot dog test is out of the fridge, not frozen. This test was done in a 1500 watt microwave oven. We microwaved the hot dog for 30 seconds, then checked the internal temperature and it was only 154 degrees Fahrenheit.

So we microwaved the hot dog for another 10 seconds. This time the internal temperature was about 170 degrees Fahrenheit. It looks great and steams hot and tastes great too.
Next, we did a wet paper towel test to see if there was any difference in the cooking process. We wrapped the hot dog in a damp paper towel and put it in the same 1500-watt microwave for 30 seconds. When we checked the internal temperature, it was just 153 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s not hot enough.
So we did another 10 seconds and it worked. The internal temperature was about 184 degrees Fahrenheit. It was very hot, looked good, and tasted great.
For this test, we put the hot dog in the microwave without the paper towel. We set the timer to 30 seconds. When we checked the internal temperature, it was 135 degrees, so we did another 10 seconds and the hot dog was 184 degrees Fahrenheit.
How To Cook Brats In A Microwave
For our final test, using a 1500-watt microwave, we did not use any paper towels and did a full 40 seconds without opening the microwave door. The hot dog looked good and was hot, with an internal temperature of 195 degrees Fahrenheit. No start, then stop and restart the process. And the hot dog didn’t explode.
We already know that there are different types of microwave ovens on the market, and each can cook differently. Whether your microwave is on the stovetop, on the counter, or both, it’s a good idea to regularly check the food you’re cooking. And with a hot dog, the internal temperature before eating should be at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
We found that Test 4 and Test 6 above were the best results. Basically, it’s up to you whether you want to wrap your hot dog in a paper towel during the heating process.
Our results show that the refrigerated hot dog was cooked with paper towels in a cooking time of 40 seconds and at a minimum of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. The benefit of adding a paper towel is that it helps keep the hot dog juicy by allowing some moisture into the inside of the hot dog. If you like juicy hot dogs, this might be just what you want. However, the hot dog still came out pretty good and didn’t dry out even without a paper towel.
How Should I Cook My Hot Dogs?
Whatever method you use to microwave your hot dog, be sure to start with an initial cooking time of 30 seconds and then add in additional 10-second intervals to make sure it doesn’t burst. The internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.
As a result, the best way to microwave hot dogs, frozen or not, is to know the right time to cook them.
Usually about 40 seconds in total will do the job, but this will depend on the power of your microwave. You know your microwave best, and when you finally see how long it takes to make a great-looking hot dog that satisfies you and is at the right core temperature, write it down in your memory bank.
There are several different ways to make a delicious hot dog, and I think everyone has a favourite. Some examples:

Place the hot dog on a microwave-safe plate without wrapping it in paper towels. Then we put it in a microwave oven with a power of 1500 watts. Cooking time without opening the lid was 1 minute. It was an accident. The hot dog exploded. So now we know that 1 minute is too long. It was too long for us in our 1500 watt microwave.
