When I was a kid, we didn’t have fancy things like a dishwasher, deep fryer, or microwave. We have a stove with an oven and a hot plate on it. So when my mom made us hot dogs, she put a pot of hot water on the stove on high heat. He poured some hot dogs in and boiled the water. Hot dogs only have to be cooked for 5 minutes or less and then we eat them on hot dog buns with lots of herbs. They are sweet because our mother made them. 🙂

Well, there is one exception, food safety! If you are at increased risk of foodborne illness, a bacterial infection such as listeriosis may be dangerous for you. I don’t eat them raw anymore.

Never! FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service) says you shouldn’t eat hot dogs raw, meaning hot dogs straight out of the package without being fried first. The reason is the risk of listeriosis. Just remember, even if the hot dog package says “Fully Cooked,” it’s not safe to eat a hot dog without heating it to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Here’s what the FSIS says: “Even though hot dogs are fully cooked, those at high risk of foodborne illness should reheat hot dogs and lunch meats until hot before eating because of the risk of listeriosis.”

How To Microwave Hot Dogs That Taste Good

Cook hot dogs until REAL! To be safe, make sure the hot dog is cooked to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit. You can easily check the temperature with a kitchen thermometer.

The second test we do is to take a cold paper towel and wrap it around a cold hot dog. Then we put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. We remove the hot dog and measure the temperature inside it. It was 78 degrees Fahrenheit. So we put the hot dog back in the microwave for another 15 seconds.

After that we checked the temperature again and it was 96 degrees Fahrenheit. Still not enough. So we put the hot dog back in the microwave for another 10 seconds and the temperature was 158 degrees Fahrenheit. We do another 5 seconds and finally the temperature of the hot dog is 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

We also used a cold hot dog but did not wrap it in a paper towel. We counted 55 seconds without opening the microwave door and the temperature inside was 168 degrees Fahrenheit when we took the hot dog out of the microwave. The hot dog looked good, was hot and tasted great. It didn’t explode and it didn’t collapse.

The following hot dog test was done with hot dog straight from the refrigerator, not frozen. This test was done in a 1500W microwave oven. We microwaved the hot dog for 30 seconds, then checked the internal temperature and found only 154 degrees Fahrenheit.

So we put the hot dog back in the microwave for another 10 seconds. At this time the internal temperature is around 170 degrees Fahrenheit. Looks pretty good, warm and tastes great too.

Then we tried the wet paper towel test to see if there was any difference in the cooking process. We wrap the hot dog in a cold paper towel and put it in the same 1500 watt microwave for 30 seconds. When we checked the internal temperature, it was only 153 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s not hot enough.

We also used a 1500W microwave for our last test, never used paper towels, and went a full 40 minutes without opening the microwave door. The hot dog looks good, it was hot and the internal temperature was 195 degrees Fahrenheit. It won’t start, then stop, then start the process again. And the hot dogs did not explode.

We already know that there are many microwave ovens on the market to choose from, and each of them can cook food in different ways. Whether you have a microwave on the stove, a countertop microwave, or both, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the food you’re cooking. And for hot dogs, the internal temperature must be at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit before use.

We found that the best results of test 4 and test 6 are higher. In general, it is up to you whether or not to wrap the hot dog in a paper towel during the heating process.

Our results show that a cold hot dog cooks to at least 165 degrees with and without a paper towel in 40 minutes of cooking time. The benefit of adding a paper towel would be to help seal in some of the moisture in the hot dog to make it juicier. If you like juicy hot dogs, this might be up your alley. However, the hot dog still comes out nice and dry without a paper towel.

No matter how you choose to cook your hot dog in the microwave, you should make sure to start with an initial cooking time of 30 seconds, then make sure it doesn’t explode before adding additional 10 second intervals until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.

Overall, the microwave is the best way to cook hot dogs, frozen or not, as long as you know the right amount of time to cook them.

Usually about 40 seconds is enough, but it depends on the power of your microwave. You know your microwave best, and when you finally figure out how long it takes to cook the perfect hot dog that satisfies you and is at the right internal temperature, write it down in your memory bank.
