When I was growing up, we didn’t have fancy things like the Instant Pot, deep fryer, or microwave oven. We have a stove with an oven and burners on it. So when my mom made us hotdogs, she would put a pot on the stove on high heat with a little hot water. I throw in some sausages and put the water on to boil. Hot dogs only need to be cooked for about 5 minutes or less, then we eat them on hot dog buns with lots of mustard spread on them. They are delicious because mom made them. 🙂

And believe it or not, we eat cold hotdogs, straight out of the package, as a quick snack. But, it came from the fridge. After all, hotdogs are perfectly cooked, right? Well, there is one exception, food safety! If you have a higher risk of foodborne illness, infection from a bacteria such as listeriosis can be a threat to you. I don’t eat it raw anymore.

No! The FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service) says that you should not eat a hot dog raw, which means hot dogs straight from the package without first cooking them. The reason is the threat of listeriosis. Just remember, even if the hot dog package says “Fully Cooked,” it’s not safe to eat hot dogs without first heating them to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Here’s what the FSIS says: “Even if hot dogs are fully cooked, people at increased risk of foodborne illness should reheat hot dogs and deli meats until hot. very before eating, because of the threat of listeriosis”.

Sausages should be cooked until HOT! So to be safe, make sure the hot dog is cooked to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit. You can easily check the temperature with a kitchen thermometer.

👩‍🍳 How long does it take to heat a hot dog in the microwave? (7 attempts) Test 1. A frozen sausage wrapped in a dry paper towel

Alright, here’s our first test. The cooking method we chose was to use a 1500-watt microwave and a paper towel. We took a frozen hotdog out of the freezer, wrapped it in a layer of paper towel, and then placed it on a microwave-safe plate. We cook the frozen dog in the microwave for 30 seconds. Then we take the sausage out of the microwave and check the internal temperature. It was only 107.2 degrees Fahrenheit so we microwaved the hot dog for 15 seconds.

Again, we took out the hot dog and the internal temperature was 144 degrees Fahrenheit. We microwaved the sausage again for 10 seconds, took it out, and then checked the internal temperature again, and this time it was 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Hooray! The hot dog looks great and tastes great. It was warm inside and it didn’t explode or stick.

The second test we did was to take a wet paper towel and put it on a frozen hotdog. Then we put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Remove the sausage and take the internal temperature. It was 78 degrees Fahrenheit. So we put the hot dog back in the microwave for 15 seconds.

After that we checked the internal temperature again and it was 96 degrees Fahrenheit. It is not enough. So again we microwaved the hot dog for 10 seconds, and the temperature was 158 degrees Fahrenheit. We did another 5 seconds and finally, the temperature of the hot dog was 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

We still use a frozen hotdog, but we don’t wrap it in a paper towel. We timed it for 55 seconds without opening the microwave door and the internal temperature was 168 degrees Fahrenheit when we took the sausage out of the microwave. The hot dog looks great, hot and very tasty. It didn’t explode or stick.

The next hot dog test is a hot dog fresh from the fridge, not frozen. This test was done in a 1500 watt microwave. We microwaved a hot dog for 30 seconds, then checked the internal temperature and it was only 154 degrees Fahrenheit.

Then we put the hot dog back in the microwave for another 10 seconds. This time the internal temperature was about 170 degrees Fahrenheit. It looks great and it’s very hot, and it tastes great too.

Next, we tried the damp paper towel test to see if there was any difference in the cooking process. We wrapped the hot dog in a wet paper towel and placed it in the same 1500 watt microwave for 30 seconds. When we checked the internal temperature, it was only 153 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s not hot enough.

So we did 10 more seconds, and that was it. The internal temperature is about 184 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s so hot, it looks so good and it tastes so good.

For this test, we microwaved the sausage without a paper towel. We set the timer for 30 seconds. When we checked the internal temp it was 135 degrees so we did 10 more seconds and the hot dog temp was a good 184 degrees Fahrenheit.

Still using a 1500-watt microwave for our latest test, we never used paper towels, and we went a full 40 seconds without opening the microwave door. The hot dog looks good, it’s hot and the internal temperature is 195 degrees Fahrenheit. It won’t start, then stop, then start the process again. And the hotdog didn’t explode.

We already know that there are many different microwaves to choose from in the market and each one can cook differently from the other. Whether you have an over-the-range microwave, a countertop microwave, or both, it’s always a good idea to keep checking the food you’re cooking. And with hot dogs, the internal temperature should be cooked to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit before eating.

We found that the best results were Test 4 and Test 6 above. Basically, this is what you want if you want to wrap your hot dog in a paper towel during the heating process.

Our results showed that the refrigerated sausage was cooked to at least 165 degrees with and without a paper towel in 40 seconds of cooking time. The benefit of adding a paper towel is to help seal in some of the moisture in the hot dog to keep it juicier. If you like juicy hot dogs, that might be where you want to go. The hot dog still does well and is less dry without the paper towel as well.

Whichever method you choose to use to microwave your hot dog, you want to be sure to start with an initial cooking time of 30 seconds and then check for puffs before adding an additional 10- second intervals until an internal temperature of 165 degrees. .

In general, the microwave is a good way to cook hot dogs, whether it’s frozen or not, if you know the right time to cook them.
