Did you know there are two types of measuring cups? There is one for dry ingredients such as sugar and flour and one for liquids such as oil, water or milk.
Dry measuring cups are meant to be leveled with, say, a butter knife. While the liquid measuring cup has a small spout that serves to pour the liquid, so you can’t overfill it. You will find the measurements on the side of the measuring cup and line, rather than measuring at the top of the measuring cup.
How Many Cups In A Gallon
Depending on the dry ingredient will depend on how it is measured. Often, for items like brown sugar, you will pack the sugar well into the measuring cup. Regular sugar, rice, oatmeal, pour it until your measuring cup is full or out of the container.
For the flour, you will take a smaller spoon and put the flour in the correct cup. Make sure you don’t wrap it tightly in the bowl.
If you do, you will end up with too much flour and it may leave your mixture too dry and your recipe may not turn out well.
To measure your liquid ingredients, take your measuring cup and place it on a flat surface. Slowly pour the liquid into you while lowering yourself to eye level to see where your liquid is measured. Eye level is important to ensure you are measuring at the correct level.

Since my forties, I’ve been diving deep into my grandmother’s cookbook of her favorite recipes, nostalgic for the meals, desserts, and treats she would make for us as children. One of the things that always amazed me about him was his memory of kitchen measurements and that undoubtedly came from decades of cooking and baking. I wish I had that power, but alas, I don’t. Not yet, anyway.
But I digress…let’s go through basic measurement conversions for dry ingredients (such as brown sugar, a cup of flour, etc.), liquid ingredients, four dry ingredients, wet ingredients, and fluid ounces (fl oz). For a handy chart, cheat sheet, and conversion table, click here!
