Cup Per Quart – These are all important measurements that are hard to remember, but very important in cooking and home brewing. The metric system would certainly be easier, but we Americans love our imperial measurements and will keep fluid ounces, cups, and liters for a while.
But how did we arrive at this system when the rest of the world uses a metric system based on decimals? Well, it’s a long story, or rather an old one, going back to ancient Rome. Everything in the ROM is measured in 1/2s, 1/4s, 1/8s, etc. This seems awkward today because the decimal base metric system makes so much sense, but in Roman times a liter or 1/4 gallon was. Easy to measure. A gallon jug is cut in half and then in half again. An easy job that gives exactly the same size of liters. Splitting a jug of wine in 1/10th of a second was difficult to do accurately.
Cup Per Quart
1 liter is 32 fluid ounces or 4 cups. The word quart comes from the Latin word quartus, which means fourth. In liquid measurements, this means ¼ gallon.
How Many Ml In A Quart?
1 cup is 8 ounces. 16 cups in a gallon, 4 cups in a quart, and 2 cups in a pint.
Unlike the term quart, the cup did not come from Rome. Cups weren’t really a thing until 1896, when Fanny Farmer, director of the Boston Cooking School, insisted on the measure in her popular book, “The Boston Cooking School Cook Book.” Before Fanny introduced this change, many recipes used terms such as a handful of rice or a generous serving of sugar. I know people who can cook like that. Pour the ingredients and their cooking turns out amazing. For the rest, Fannie Farmer’s standardization was a great service.
