If you need to measure liquid ingredients but aren’t sure how much is half of what the recipe calls for, or how many teaspoons per cup, it’s handy to have on hand. Yes, you can weigh it, which is more accurate than measuring cups and spoons, but I rarely go that far.

This recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies in a Mug is one of our favorites that we make often! It’s fun to make because it’s quick and makes one serving, and the kids think it’s a fun mug recipe just for them. For this you mostly only need measuring spoons. Measuring instruments are half and half or double.

This works when measuring dry ingredients like flour or liquids with measuring cups. Other things to keep in mind when it comes to accuracy are whether you should package your ingredients (like brown sugar) or spoon in the flour by measuring it properly.

I can’t be the only one who has had to google how many teaspoons in 1/3 cup or something. Honestly, I did and took the time to create these printable kitchen dimensions

I’ve come up with another resource that you might find useful as well, and that’s really how to make a half recipe of sorts. One year when we were alone, we wanted our favorite dishes, but the recipe amounts had to be divided by 2, so we made less.

I had to look up things like how many tablespoons in a half 1/4 cup and other baking measurements I just wrote down so I could create another chart to share for this.

What makes measuring from spoons to tablespoons unnecessarily complicated are the different types of measuring units. Because, worldwide, there is no universal measurement system.

Further complicating matters, concentrations of wet and dry components, or liquid and solid amounts, add another layer of scientific complexity.

Still, if you want to get technical about it, there are actually several measurement systems around the world. This includes:

Understanding the different units of measurement, volume, and weight is not only a math lesson, but also a history lesson.

However, let’s not get into why the British Empire imposed its system, or why Australia and the United States had to compete against it, whether the metric system was better or not.

Remember… three teaspoons make one tablespoon. Unless you are in Australia. Because an Australian tablespoon consists of four teaspoons.

Make sure you understand that the ingredients must be level. No more, no less. Just as too little sugar turns a cookie into a dog cookie, too much salt ruins a recipe.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve messed up a recipe because I wrote “T” instead of “t” and vice versa.

If you’ve paid attention in science class, you know that a fluid ounce is not the same as a solid ounce. Fluids are measured in liters, not grams, and all that jazz.

That’s all well and good, but converting teaspoons to tablespoons doesn’t have to be complicated.

Wet or dry, liquid or solid, a teaspoon is a teaspoon. A tablespoon is a tablespoon, a cup is a cup. If the recipe calls for one cup of flour in the dry ingredients, you can technically use the same cup as one cup of water.

If you want to use your spoon to measure a cup, remember that 16 tablespoons make up a cup. And 1 tablespoon is equal to 3 teaspoons.

That means 36 teaspoons make one cup. I sincerely hope you never have to measure a cup with a teaspoon.

If you’ve ever wondered why you need separate measuring cups for dry and liquid foods, your days of confusion are over. There is a method to the madness.

With dry ingredients, it’s easier to have a straight edge on top. This makes it easy to create a double dimension. All you have to do is flatten the stack fill. Creates a stable unit of measurement.

It can be flattened with the back of a knife or a spatula. No more “too little” or “too much”, recipes become more consistent.
