Did you know there are two types of measuring cups? One is for dry ingredients such as sugar and flour and one for liquids such as oil, water or milk.
Dry measuring cups are meant to be leveled with a butter knife. Whereas a liquid measuring cup has a small spout to pour out the liquid, so you can’t overfill it. You’ll find measurements along the lines on the side of the cup, versus the measurements up to the top of the measuring cup.

The dry ingredients depend on how you measure. Many times for items like brown sugar, you will pack the sugar tightly into a measuring cup. Regularly add sugar, rice, oats, you just keep adding it until your measuring cup is full or the container runs out.
For the flour, you take a small spoon and pour the flour into an accurate measuring cup. Make sure you never pack it tightly into the cup.
If you do, you’ll end up with too much flour and it can make your mixture too dry and your recipe won’t turn out well.
To measure your liquid ingredients, take your measuring cup and place it on a flat surface. Pour your liquid slowly while bending down to eye level to see where your liquid measures. Eye level is important to ensure you are measuring at the correct level.

Baking is an art, but it’s also a science. Achieving the perfect cake, cookies, pie or bread isn’t just about having the right ingredients and following a recipe. You also need to make sure you measure them correctly.

Too much of a particular ingredient can give your baked goods an odd flavor or texture. Too little can cause your recipe to fail (and we don’t prefer failure!).
