25 Kilometers In Miles

25 Kilometers In Miles – On October 9, 2008, after reaching 25.6 kilometers from the surface of Enceladus, NASA’s Cassini captured this stunning mosaic as the spacecraft exited this moon of Saturn.

Soils and eroded surfaces are not uncommon in these southern parts of Saturn’s moons. Instead, the surface is dotted with fractures, rolls, and ridges, all characteristic of unusual tectonic activity on a relatively small scale. In this color-enhanced view, areas that appear blue-green are assumed to be painted with larger grains than those that appear white or gray.

Scar tissue, or sulci, is visible on the right side of the termination, surrounded by a ridge belt. The most famous lunar planes are from eight different regions that lie within or near the tiger. However, in this view, the most important feature is the Labtayt Sulci, about a mile (0.6 km) deep running north-north toward the center of the mosaic.

Near the summit, prominent mountains are Ebony and Cufa Dorsae. This false-color mosaic consists of 28 images obtained by Cassini’s attached camera at seven feet or exposure positions. For each foot, four images using filters sensitive to ultraviolet, visible light, and infrared (wavelengths between 338 and 930 nanometers) are combined to create a single image. The mosaic is an image based on longitude 64.49 degrees south, longitude 283.87 degrees, and has a resolution of 196 kilometers per pixel. The original images ranged from 180 meters (594 ft) to 288 meters (950 ft) per pixel and were obtained between 30,000 and 48,000,000 kilometers (18,750 and 30,000,000 miles) from Enceladus. Orientation was obtained on a 73 degree Enceladus spacecraft or phase.
