I called it “grams to cups/cups to grams” because those are the conversions I’m most often asked about, but really, it can be between grams, cups, ounces, or milliliters for many baking ingredients. change common. I asked my followers on social media how they fill their glasses. Most people take ingredients like flour or sugar out of the bag and then add them, so this is my approach when measuring similar ingredients for my calculator. I also like to pinch the bag before I cut any buds.

Many conversion tables give 1 cup of flour as 120g. However, I found that the only way I could reduce it was to sift the flour and then spoon the sifted flour into the cup. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to sift the flour after measuring instead of before. So in my conversions, you’ll see that the flour bowl is heavier because it shows how I fill the bowl.

I pour the ingredients in the smaller packets straight from the bag into a glass and lift it up.

I push soft ingredients like butter or cream cheese with the back of a spoon to fill the gaps, then shake the top.

In baking, accuracy is important, so for my baking recipes I recommend always using grams if you can.

When I was doing all the conversions for this calculator, I found that the way I fill the bowl can have a significant effect on the amount of ingredients I can get.

In the picture below, the two glasses look like they are full of flour. However, the one on the right is about 40% heavier than the one on the left because I made the flour as dry as possible.

## Us Cups To Ounces & Grams For Common Ingredients

The official US cup size is 236.588 ml, but most cups available for purchase in stores hold 240 ml for simplicity (that’s what I estimated in my calculator). However, some cup makers sell 250 ml cups (but keep ½ the 120 ml cup!).

This is not a big problem as long as you know what you have. The bigger problem is that not all cups sold are very accurate.

I have two sets of measurements and neither takes the right amount. In one batch, my ¼ cup holds 65ml (it should be 60ml) but the full cup only holds 225ml when it should be 240ml (don’t worry, I’ve adjusted everything here to fit the correct size cup be).

If you have a recipe like pie or shortcrust pastry that calls for cold butter straight from the fridge, how do you put it in a bowl to measure it?

Imagine you are weighing nuts. If you put them in the bowl whole, it will cost you much less than if you chop them up before putting them in the bowl.

There are also some ingredients like Nutella or Black Treacle that are removed from the cup after filling. You’re not likely to get everything you put in, so you may end up adding less to your mix than recommended.

Many measuring sets have a tare button that allows you to set the scale to 0 so you can continue measuring multiple ingredients in one bowl. That’s great because it means you can pour everything you need for your mix without messing around with a lot of extra measuring equipment.

Imagine you have a recipe that calls for a bowl of butter, flour, maple syrup and Nutella (not really what you’re going to do!). To get an accurate measurement, you will either need to have multiple cups or wash the cup between each ingredient before you measure the next.

The little dog is just at the bottom of the cup. As dimensions go, it’s a bit vague! Likewise, the amount you can fit into a regular bowl can vary significantly depending on the shape of the bowl. That’s why I don’t use any of these descriptions in my recipes (for me it’s a bowl, spoon, or slotted spoon).
