The Ebro River covers one-sixth of the Iberian Peninsula (over 8.5 million hectares) as it flows from the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain. Scientists estimate that the river first reached the Mediterranean about 13-15 million years ago. For non-commercial use only, not for resale… Ideally several teams of five bikes travel from different countries, set off on a Saturday morning and gather at one point at the end, often finishing with an Easter breakfast. This is a very cool idea. Darts is another team event in the form of the 13.5 hour RUSA 200km. Tidewater Rando held its first darts on April 4th. Initially, we had two teams that were going to go on different routes and meet at a common finish. Unfortunately, personal schedules got in the way and we only had one team of five.

Rain was forecast in the morning. Fortunately, it was relatively warm, with an expected high of 62 degrees. Rain is tolerable at this temperature. The wind was northwest at 16 mph with gusts over 20 mph. As you can see on the map below, the northwest wind certainly made the first 80 miles more challenging. We started our trip at a Burger King in Windsor, Virginia
And here and there we feel rain. But it didn’t rain, and the day was getting better. We laughed sympathetically when we learned that one of our riders had packed two correct shoes for the trip. Away from home, he had two choices: go home or suffer. He decided to suffer, riding 128 miles in one cycling shoe and one rubber sandal. It’s hard core!
For me, this trip was different from the others in two ways: firstly, because it was a 13.5 hour trip, the team had to control their pace and make longer stops than usual to avoid arriving earlier than expected. According to the rules, we must drive at least 25 km

The trip was relatively uneventful. Isle of Wight and Surrey have their share of free dogs. They gave a little excitement…but only a little. I’m not even trying to beat them. Most of the dogs run close by to see me off their property. We stopped for lunch at McDonald’s in Waverly. It wasn’t a checkpoint, so you had to manage your time wisely. It was after 12pm and still 21 miles to the next checkpoint town with no restaurants. Neither of us wanted to drive that far, a total of 79 miles, without lunch. So Mickey-D’s was our best choice for fuel. It was also good to get away from the wind for a while. The next control was in Claremont. There are very few. The store has a small stock. I bought a sandwich… an ICE CREAM sandwich… and then enjoyed a short break. Our journey from Claremont was an unfamiliar one. I had no idea there was a 12% grade in the area! Fortunately, the worst part was only 1/4 mile long, followed by another 1/2 mile with less incline. As mentioned above, Smithfield was our last control. I think we were there for about 45 minutes. I had the tuna salad. Good stuff! The sun was setting; so we donned our reflective vests and turned on our lights as we headed out for the final 15 mile stretch.
Our trip ended at Burger King without much fanfare. I had a “recovery” and passed the papers. I also checked my computers. Two weeks ago I did some calibration on a 200km ACP ride. It was a trip when I saw the results. Trip with GPS
Measures a route of 127.6 miles. I did about 1/4 mile of the “bonus ride”. So I would say the measurement is very close, especially at this distance. Wired computer
Different. I will apply another fix to the wireless network to reduce this error. I believe that the distance displayed on the smartphone reflects the reduced accuracy inherent in most smartphone GPS receivers. I’m not happy with it, but it’s good to know the difference. By the way, my Cue Sheet program stopped working last week. I want to know why this happened. In the meantime, I decided to try out the RwGPS navigation feature. I was VERY proud of it. I think I’ll write a separate entry for the app review. It’s so good! That will have to wait as I am going on a bike camping weekend. I will blog about the navigation program and the hike later.
