And felt a little rain here and there. But the rain stayed away and the day continued to improve. We had a good laugh when we found out that one of our riders had two good riding shoes. Far from home, he had two options: go home or suffer. He chose to persevere by walking 128 miles in a cycling shoe and a rubber sandal. It’s hard!

The trip was relatively uneventful. The Isle of Wight and Surry counties both have their fair share of loose dogs. They provided a little excitement…but only a little. I don’t even bother trying to beat them. Most dogs run alongside me to escort me away from their property. We had lunch at McDonald’s in Waverly. There was no checkpoint so we had to manage our time wisely. It was after 12:00 and still 21 miles to the next checkpoint town, which has no restaurants. Neither of us wanted to drive that far, a total of 79 miles, without lunch. So Mickey-D’s was the best choice for fuel. It was good to get out of the wind a bit too. The next check was at Claremont. There is very little there. The store is low on stock. I bought a sandwich… an ice cream sandwich… and then I rested for a while. Our way out of Claremont was unknown. I had no idea there was a 12% grade in the area! Fortunately, the worst of them was only 1/4 mile long, followed by another 1/2 mile of less grades. As mentioned above, our final check was at Smithfield. I think I was there for about 45 minutes. I had a tuna salad sub. Good things! The sun was setting; so we donned our reflective vests and turned on our light as we set off for the final 15 mile stretch.

Different. I will apply another wireless patch to reduce this error. I think the distance shown on the smartphone reflects the poor accuracy inherent in most smartphone GPS receivers. I’m not mad about it, but it’s good to know about the difference. By the way, my Cue Sheet app stopped working last week. I want to know why this happened. Meanwhile, I chose to try the navigation function of RwGPS. I was VERY pleased with it. I think I’ll write a separate entry to review the app. It’s so good!
