I asked my followers on social media how they fill the cup. Most people scoop ingredients like flour or sugar out of the bag and then layer the top, so I’ve used this approach when measuring similar ingredients for my calculator. I also like to squeeze the bag a bit beforehand to break up any lumps.

How Many Ounces In A Cup (liquid And Dry Measurements)

Many conversion tables give 1 cup of flour as 120 grams. However, the only way I’ve found to cut back is to sift the flour and then use a spoon to fill the cup with the sifted flour. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to sift the flour after measuring it, not before. So in my conversions you will see that the cup of flour weighs more because it reflects how I fill the cup.

For the ingredients in the small packets, I pour them directly from the bag into the cup and layer the top.

For softer ingredients like butter or cream cheese, I push it into the cup with the back of a spoon to make sure any voids are filled and then put it on top.

Accuracy is important in baking, so for my baking recipes I recommend always using grams if you can.

As I worked through all the conversions for this calculator, I found that how I filled the cup could significantly affect the amount of an ingredient I could fit.

In the picture below, both cups are filled with flour. However, the one on the right weighs 40% more than the one on the left, because I packed the dough as tightly as possible.

The official US cup size is 236.588 ml, but most cups available in stores assume 240 ml for convenience (this is what I assumed in my calculator). However, some cup manufacturers sell cups that are 250ml (but keep the half cup at 120ml!).

This is not a big problem as long as you know you own it. A big problem is that not all cups sold are very accurate.

I have two sets of measuring cups, and neither holds the amount they should. The min¼ cup in a set holds 65ml (it should be 60ml), but the whole cup only holds 225ml when it should be 240ml (don’t worry, I’ve adjusted everything here to make sure it’s correct for the right size on the cup).
