Most of us don’t own a Bugatti Chiron, a supercar with a top speed of 300 miles per hour. Chances are the minivan or sedan in your driveway only intends to do 140 or 160 mph.
But even if you hit this family roadster, you can’t go past 100, leaving a lot of unused real estate on your speedometer at 120, 140 and (if your car is serious) 160.
From a design perspective, this doesn’t make much sense: why bother making a gauge that doesn’t accurately reflect the car’s true capabilities? The answer is a bit more complicated.
Logistically, automakers cannot create a new gauge for every vehicle. Because of the cost of it, they don’t want to either. So in an effort to streamline the speedometer manufacturing process, many use the same gauges for their mid-performance cars as their higher-end models.

Practice also shows the need for manufacturers to sell internationally. Vehicles that normally travel on roads without speed limits – say, the German autobahn – need more dashboard space if the car’s performance is to match the road most people travel on, Kurt Tesnow, who runs the speedometer and instrument clusters for General Motors, said the Associated Press.
While some manufacturers don’t necessarily use the same gauge across their lines, they have a vested interest in satisfying people’s need for speed.
“People really want to see higher numbers,” Fawaz Baltaji, business development manager for Yazaki North America, a major supplier of speedometers to auto companies, told the AP. “It introduces a more powerful engine. It has a marketing idea.”
In 1974, President Nixon created a national speed limit of 55 mph. (On older cars, you’ll still see a redline at 55, just for that reason.) In 1979, the head of the National Highway Safety Administration imposed a rule prohibiting gauges from exceeding 85 mph. President Reagan changed the rule two years later, and manufacturers quickly returned to 120 top speeds.

There appears to be a psychological benefit to having speedometers outside the normal driving habits of most drivers, according to Stuart Reed, chair of the Department of Transportation Design at ArtCenter College of Design.
When the gauge hits 80 mph, highway driving pushes the gauge to the edge, which can cause some degree of anxiety. But if it is above 140, the line will remain vertical on the pressure gauge. It looks more like a top performance car and therefore safer.
“Maybe the speedometer, in a certain position relative to other things, is a natural position for highway cruising,” Reed told Business Insider. “And the rest are just numbers.”
Of course, if these numbers are so high that drivers begin to believe they can handle high speeds, they may drive more carefully. Suddenly, a used Honda Civic starts to look a bit like a Bugatti – for better or for worse.
