140km To Miles – Within a week. When I first started this journey, I will admit that after reading a few books and crunching the numbers (outlined here) I arbitrarily settled on 140 as my maximum weekly mileage. I rated myself as highly competitive (competing with myself, to be clear!), so I needed a max mileage between 128 and 144 km according to Hudson and Fitzgerald (Run Faster), and I knew that Daniels (Daniels’ Running Formula) recommends 112 km to 240 km per week for optimal performance. I really liked (and still do) the sound of Optimum Performance! But she didn’t know what a hundred miles would really look like. Or if it were possible!
It’s doable… And it was hard. Okay, but everyone in one breath. I ran twice a day on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, only once on Sunday, Thursday and Saturday. To be honest, I was scheduled to run twice on Thursday, but when the time came, I missed it the second time, falling asleep on the couch, exhausted from Wednesday night’s intense interval/tempo workout. finally catching up. She arrived at work in the morning ready for a nap, but of course she had to work. So falling asleep before I got home was almost inevitable. In general, 140 km per week was not as crazy as I originally imagined when I came up with the number at the beginning of January.

While I think I’m probably capable of more, I won’t be attempting anything like that this round. I stick to my pre-planned schedule, 140km max. There are other things to focus on. For example, ensuring that quality training is really quality. I pedaled every session this week, even though some of them may have been strategic. The wind yesterday for Saturday practice was ridiculous: 40-40 mph. She was to do 4 sets of 6 minute steady pace after an easy 5K run, then 1 hour of rest followed by a 20 minute steady pace and finish with an easy 5K. I strategically positioned myself to run against the wind and up the hills when the race was supposed to be easy. For tempos, I would turn and fly with the wind and hit my rhythm easily (relatively). To be fair, my easy pace was a bit slower than usual as I was battling the wind!

One hundred and forty kilometers. I think that sounds impressive. And for me, that’s how it should be. Just because it’s proof that I can achieve anything I put my mind to, no matter how crazy it may sound at first. No matter how crazy most people around me still think it sounds. I think that’s the biggest lesson I’m learning of all: that you can do whatever you want in life, no matter how crazy it sounds to you or other people, that you’re the only one standing in your way, that success is the same. to hard work. . I’m the only one standing in my way. This is about running 140km a week with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon, but this lesson applies to all other areas of my life. I am learning to get out of my own way and allow myself the joy of success.
