Most of us don’t own a Bugatti Chiron whose speedometer tops 300 mph. A minivan or sedan in your driveway is likely going 140 or 160 mph.
But even if you throw in that family roadster, you’re unlikely to go over 100, with all the unused speedometer real estate at 120, 140 and (if your car talks serious game) 160.
From a design perspective, it makes no sense: why make a gauge that doesn’t accurately reflect the car’s true capabilities? The answer turns out to be a bit more complicated.
Logistically, automakers cannot manufacture a new gauge for every car. Given its cost, they don’t want to either. So, in an effort to simplify the process of making speedometers, many use the same gauges for their mid-performance vehicles as they do for their high-end models.

This practice also reflects the need for manufacturers to sell internationally. Cars that travel a lot on roads with no speed limit — say, Germany’s Autobahn — need a little extra dashboard space if the car’s performance is to match the road the car travels frequently, Kurt Tesno Motors, which oversees speedometer and instrument panels for General, told The Associated Press.
While some manufacturers don’t necessarily use the same gauge across their various lines, they still have a vested interest in accommodating the public’s need for speed.
“People really want to see high numbers,” Fawaz Baltaji, North America business development manager for Yazaki, a major supplier of speedometers to auto companies, told the AP. “It means a more powerful engine. There’s a marketing priority.”
In 1974, President Nixon set the national speed limit at 55 mph. (In older cars, you can still see the red line at 55, for this very reason.) In 1979, the head of the National Highway Safety Administration passed a rule prohibiting gauges from going above 85 mph. President Reagan rescinded the rule two years later, and manufacturers quickly reached a top speed of 120.

Stuart Reed, chair of the Department of Transportation Design at the ArtCenter College of Design, says speedometers appear to have a psychological benefit beyond the normal driving habits of many drivers.
If the gauge hits 80 mph, highway driving pushes the needle over the edge, which can be a bit of a concern. But if it reaches 140, the line is mostly vertical in the gauge. It looks safer than a top performance car.
“A speedometer in a certain position relative to other things might be a kind of natural position for highway cruising,” Reid told Business Insider. “And the rest are just numbers.”
However, if those numbers are so high that drivers begin to believe they can handle higher speeds, they may drive more recklessly. Suddenly, a used Honda Civic is starting to look a bit more like a Bugatti – for better or worse.
