Most of us don’t own a supercar called the Bugatti Chiron, which has a top speed of 300 mph. The minivan or sedan in your driveway means 140 or 160 miles per hour.
But even if you land on that family car, you won’t be able to go over 100, 120, 140 and (if your car is talking about serious sport) the 160 mark will leave a lot of unused real estate on your speedometer.
From a design perspective, this doesn’t make sense: Why bother with a measurement that doesn’t accurately reflect a car’s true capabilities? The answer seems very complicated.
Logically, auto manufacturers cannot make a new gauge for every car. Given the cost of doing so, they don’t want to. So in an effort to simplify the speedometer making process, many will use the same gauges for their mid-performance vehicles as they do for their high-end models.

This practice also reflects the need for manufacturers to sell internationally. Cars that travel on roads with mostly no speed limits — say, the German autobahn — need extra space on the dashboard if the car’s performance matches the road the car is traveling on most of the time, Kurt Tesno, who oversees speedometers and instrument clusters at GM, told The Associated Press.
Although some manufacturers don’t like to use the same scale across their various lines, they still have the desire to satisfy people’s need for speed.
“People really want to see more numbers,” Fawaz Beltagy, director of business development for Yasaki North America, a large supplier of speedometers to auto companies, told the Associated Press. “It shows a more powerful drive. And it has a marketing idea.”

President Reagan rescinded the rule two years later, and manufacturers quickly became the top speed 120.

According to Stuart Reed, Chair of Transportation Design at the ArtCenter College of Design, there appears to be a psychological benefit to speedometers that goes beyond the normal driving habits of many drivers.
If the scale reaches 80 mph, highway driving will push the needle over the edge, which can cause some anxiety. But if the line exceeds 140, the line will be mostly vertical in measurement. It will look beyond the maximum performance of the car, and therefore it is safe.
“A speedometer can be a natural line for highway cruises at some point compared to other things,” Reed told Business Insider. “The rest is just numbers.”
