I called it “Grams to Cups / Cups to Grams” because those are the conversions I’m most often asked about, but really, it can convert between grams, cups, ounces, or milliliters for many common kitchen ingredients. So you can go from grams to cups, or cups to grams, cups to milliliters, or grams to ounces to your heart’s content.

I asked my followers on social media how they fill their cups. Most people collect ingredients like flour or sugar from a bag and then adjust from the top, so this is the approach I take when measuring these types of ingredients for my calculator. I like to squeeze the bag a bit beforehand to break up any lumps.
Many conversion charts give 1 cup of flour as 120 grams. However, I have found that sifting the flour and then using a spoon to scoop the sifted flour into a cup is the only way to reduce it. I don’t know about you, but I like to sift the flour after measuring it, not before. So in my conversions you’ll see that the cup of flour weighs more because it reflects how I fill the cup.
For the ingredients in the small packets, I pour them directly from the bag into the bowl and smooth the top.
For softer ingredients like butter or cream cheese, I run the back of a spoon over the cup to make sure any gaps are filled and then smooth the top.
Measurement Cooking Conversions
Accuracy is important when baking, so for my baking recipes I always recommend using grams if you can.
As I worked through all the conversions in this calculator, I found that the fill of the cup can greatly affect the amount of ingredient I fit.
In the picture below, both cups are filled with flour. However, the right side weighs about 40% more than the left because I packed the dough as tightly as possible.
The official US cup size is 236.588 mL, but most cups in stores assume it’s 240 mL for simplicity (this is what I assumed in my calculator). However, there are cup manufacturers that sell 250ml cups (but put the ½ cup at 120ml!).
Us Cups To Ounces & Grams For Common Ingredients
It’s not a big problem as long as you know which one you have. The biggest problem is that not all cups sold are very accurate.
I have two sets of measuring cups and neither one has the amount it should. My ¼ cup in one set is 65ml (it should be 60ml) but the full cup only holds 225ml when it’s 240ml (don’t worry, I’ve adjusted everything here to make sure it’s the right size for the cup) .

Imagine weighing a walnut. If you put them whole in the cup, they will fit much less if you chop them up before adding them to the cup.

There are also ingredients like Nutella or black treacle that are difficult to remove from a cup once filled. It’s unlikely you’ll get everything you put in, so you can add less to your mix than the recipe calls for.
Many scale sets have a tar button that allows you to set the scale to 0, so you can continue to measure more ingredients in one bowl. This is great because it means you can pour everything you need into your mix without messing around with an extra measuring cup.
Imagine you have a recipe that calls for a cup of butter, flour, maple syrup, and Nutella (not sure what you do!). To get an accurate measurement, you need to have a lot of cups or rinse the cup between each ingredient before measuring the next one.
A small glass is just below the glass. As far as measurements go, it’s a little fuzzy! As such, the amount you can fit into a heaping cup can vary greatly depending on the shape of the cup. That’s why I don’t use any of these descriptors in my recipes (that’s flat cup, tablespoon or teaspoon for me).
