Did you know there are two types of measuring cups? There is one for dry ingredients such as sugar and flour and one for chemicals such as oil, water or milk.
A dry measuring cup is designed to be dipped into with a butter knife. A liquid measuring cup has a small spout for pouring liquid, so you can’t overfill it. You will find the measurement on the side of the lined cup, opposite the measurement to the top of the measuring cup.

Depending on the dry ingredients depends on how you measure. Usually for things like brown sugar, you’ll fill the sugar tightly into a measuring cup. Add simple sugar, rice or oats until the measuring cup is full or remove it from the container.
For the flour, take a tablespoon and scoop the flour into an accurate measuring cup. Make sure it is not packed too tightly in the cup.
If you do this, you will end up with too much flour and may leave the mixture dry and your recipe may not turn out well.
To measure liquid ingredients, take a measuring cup and place it on a flat surface. Slowly pour the liquid while bending down at eye level to see where to measure the water. Eye level is important to make sure you are at the right height.

Different parts of the world use different measurement methods! The United States primarily uses measuring cups and spoons, while most of the world uses milliliters and the metric system. I’ve also included this information to help you double up or double down on recipes from around the world!
The metric system is used all over the world, with the exception of the United States, Myanmar and Liberia. Although the United States does not use the metric system, package quantities are expressed in metric and imperial measurements. The unit differs between the two systems in most units of measurement.
For example, the metric system calculates length in meters, while the imperial system uses miles. The same goes for liters and ounces, so knowing these two systems is very helpful when you’re busy in the kitchen. To make measuring things easier, I’ve put together a few numbers (milliliters and teaspoons, mostly) to make cooking easier.
